How to Leaving a Legacy

Most business owners are building a lifestyle business. They want to offer their solutions to customers, run a profitable business, and enjoy life. Of course, that's much easier said than done and many business owners make it harder than it needs to be because they don't automate their business. But that's not the focus of today's topic. 

Today, I'm thinking about the legacy we leave as business owners. Have you thought about that? What are you going to be known for? What contributions will you make? How will you be remembered?

I'm thinking about this because Pat Summit, the legendary coach of the University of Tennessee women's basketball team passed away yesterday. Coach Summit won eight national championships while coaching the team for nearly 40 years. She was a fiery competitor, effective teacher, and demanding mentor. She got the best out of her players and they loved her.

Bigger than all of that, she changed women's basketball and women's sports, giving meaning to Title IX and an opportunity to girls everywhere. For her efforts, she earned the highest Medal of Honor a civilian can receive.

Now, whether or not you're a women's basketball fan or a Title IX advocate, I think we can all agree she left a heck of a legacy. 

All of us leave a legacy of some sort. As business owners, we have a great opportunity to leave a meaningful, lasting legacy. And I've found that when we focus on the legacy we want to leave and execute to that vision, our businesses are more likely to succeed. 

SBS Idea of the Day: If you haven't clarified your vision for the company, take the time to do it. It will give profound meaning and purpose to your daily work and keep you from getting stuck in a rut.
