placing the last piece of a puzzle in

A month ago, we wrapped up ICON with a reminder to our audience that successful small businesses Get Stuff Done (GSD). Take a minute to review how you’re doing. Are you getting stuff done at the rate you want to? If not, let me offer a suggestion.

When I was growing up, my dad constantly talked to me about having a positive mental attitude. More specifically, he taught me the following:

  • Thoughts lead to words
  • Words lead to beliefs
  • Beliefs lead to actions
  • Actions lead to habits
  • Habits lead us to our goals

As a teenager, I wasn’t a big fan of the message. While in college, I didn’t think about it much. Even in my first jobs out of school, the notion of a positive mental attitude didn’t register for me.

It wasn’t until I was struggling to lead Infusionsoft in those early days that my dad’s message finally sank into my heart and mind. I gradually realized that our thoughts, words and beliefs are critical to our success because if our thoughts, words and beliefs are negative, we don’t take the positive actions needed to achieve our goals.

Are you getting stuff done? If not, examine your thoughts, words and beliefs. I can spend five minutes around an entrepreneur, observe their words (and thereby decipher their thoughts and beliefs) and predict with great accuracy how their business will perform in the following year.

Our words say a lot about us as entrepreneurs.

SBS Idea of the Day: If you’re in a rut of negativity, try one of the following: 1) read customer testimonials (you are collecting them, right?); 2) remind yourself of your purpose—WHY you are doing what you’re doing (you have established your purpose, right?); 3) catch one of your employees doing something great, get out of your chair and go talk to that person, genuinely thanking them for their contributions. These three things (service to customers, remembering our purpose and expressing gratitude with compliments) are all great ways to transform our negative thoughts, words and beliefs into positivity that promotes action so we can Get Stuff Done and reach our goals.
